Why are there so few walkable cities in the United States today?
Because everyone is expected to drive everywhere. Automotive lobby. Gas/Oil lobby. Government sucks so we couldn't fix it even if we wanted to. Aversion to public transit. Hyper-independence in our people. Take your pick.

The serious answer, cars.No matter how much you circle around the Great Migration and "diversity," the truth is automobiles had established themselves as the primary, popular mode of transportation, thus all new communities would be constructed to cater to this need. There's a reason whites' asylum from the cities were constructed in that low-density, high-traffic output way instead of new comfy walkable small towns, and it isn't the ad hoc excuse that it somehow magically repels blacks (which it doesn't)
