And it was comfy - especially for teenage awkward dating. You and your date went and picked it together so that provided some flirt/banter opportunity. There was free popcorn at the store. Then you drive her to the store to get some snacks before even getting back home to start it up. This is an example. Also, no access to cell phones let to all sorts of social encounters based on not being able to find where you were going, not being able to figure it out with a phone, meeting someone at a specific place for an event (it was under a letter on a giant sign at my mall, or by a tree at a park). It was different.
