Putin needs these shadow tankers to support his war on Ukraine while Maduro needs these shadow tankers to continue to pay his inner circle. Around 70% of Venezuela's oil exports are transported via a "shadow fleet" of vessels. That is crucial revenue that Maduro uses to pay his security apparatus & keep them loyal. If we crack down on these illicit revenues, Maduro's ability to finance his brutal regime will plummet. So now you have Venezuelan military brass who are staring down the barrels of US missiles that a crazy US President is itching to fire on them but this time, Maduro won't even be able to financially reward them for the risks they are taking. If I'm a middle level Maduro regime member and I see a crazy ass POTUS threaten to destroy me everyday, I'm hated by my people and now Maduro can't even afford to pay me for these escalating risks, all of a sudden, that "amnesty for defection" offer by the Venezuelan opposition sounds REAL good right now. Mass seizures of Venezuelan shadow oil tankers, combined with the threats of military action, might be the only way to convince the security apparatus that Maduro is now a liability to them & should be removed. Maduro knows this too & that's probably why he's surrounding himself with a lot more Cubans rather than Venezuelans. Good move

If Russia really wanted it could sink any U.S. ship with their subs. Obviously though Putin has taken the strategy of non-escalation and it's worked out for him in the long run. The U.S. is leaving Europe and gave up on Ukraine. So while I don't think it's a smart move by the U.S. because it's just a type of escalation that can be worked out easily with negotiations, the U.S. does not have diplomats anymore capable of talking like adults, so I guess this is the best they can do.
