Would conscription in Ukraine have been possible if people had any idea it was going to devolve into a trench warfare meat grinder? I remember early on in 2022 it was a "Home by Christmas" type of vibe, where it was assumed the conflict would be ended in decisive lightening strikes. By the time they realized it was going to be a long bog of a conflict, the MPs and infrastructure for tardwrangling recruits was already in place.I ask because conscription is being floated in countries like the UK. Probably not out of a genuine need, but the armies fearmongering as usual. In online discussions people talk about how others will passively take it if it does happen, but I'm really not sure. I think the current Ukranian war has soured people pretty heavily on warfare because it's proven itself to be WW I meatgrindery. We've had so many years of curbstomping third world armies and treating the military like a career, that the actual horrors of war have been forgotten about.There's also the declining birthrates and replacement migration factor where populations are substituted in real time as soon as they're burnt up. Even if the Ukraine wins this war, their demographics will be permanently shot, the new Indian and Filipino majority that's brought in to settle the land will celebrate their own holidays instead of giving a war remembrance. Those Ukrainian graves will probably be ripped up for new housing development for Pakistanis.I honestly think the end result of this conflict could be that major powers are just unable to start peer to peer wars. If a country like UK or Germany does conscription, people would flood out the doors in a massive wave to wait out the conflict in somewhere like Bolivia, if they try to stop them I think people would resist violently.
