The dog worship is over the top here, I'd agree. I inherited my dog and bonded with it (she's fifteen) as she's truly a delightful little creature. Most any dog at least serves as a vigilant sentinel in a house, alerting occupants to bumps in the night or whatever. That's a job in my estimation.
