If you were from Beijing, you probably wouldn't even be able to understand someone from Nanjing. Even today, there are still completely separate and distinct ethnic groups of "Han Chinese" (Cantonese, Hakka, Fuzhounese, etc), who speak mutually unintelligible languages. The term just collectively refers to any ethnic group that was traditionally a loyal subject of the Chinese Emperors. It is similar to how everyone in the Roman Empire started calling themselves "Romans" by the late empire. Even people in Wales continued to call themselves "Romans" into the Middle Ages.
