WOW! look at all those high test men. yea, we got to go back
>>
>>524090911
They moved the tables into pubs.
Turns out people want to drink while they play.
>>
Same thing that happened to bowling alleys.
Used to be everywhere, now more of a niche interest.
Fewer people are into these kinds of activities, they're into other games of skill.
Also the government forced these businesses to allow niggers to come in, and they'd always come in and trash the place, and soon afterwards it would close its doors.

We still have a few around, but the billard halls tend to have bars and the bars tend to have billiard halls.

Since thread will die soon does anybody know what to look for when buying a pool table? I want one but no idea what’s good or bad.
>>
>>524090911
Both of my grandpas died. They would have loved this thing, 50 years ago.
>>
>>524091266
The closest bowling alley to me is located inside of a bar.
Again probably the same reason they moved pool/billiards tables to pubs.

They let women in.

Hustlers took everyone's money and a hustler overpopulation happened in which no one wanted to play for money but all tables had dudes in them waiting for bets.
So people went to drink in them instead but there was no space and beer got expensive so only hustlers went in but they got tired of the competitive aspect and the scene died down, so nowadays they are only populated by a couple of oldfags.
>>
In the 1920s NYC had over 4000 pool halls lol. Even in the 90s my shitty town had two and other places would have a coin op table where you could play

The local bowls club in a predominantly white retirement area had a large snooker hall inside it. The old boys used to come in with briefcases full of maintenance brushes etc and would actually look after the tables just for something to do. You’d go there at midday and pay $1 to turn the light on over the table for a full hour and play snooker while drinking a schooner of beer. It was nice and quiet and super friendly.

I moved for work and moved back fifteen years later. Its just poker machines now. Thats it. Completely removed. The well lit spacious calm atmosphere is a dimly lit hall full of pokie machines.

In the 80's and the 90s there was an attempt to bring them back for poseur pseudo hipster millenials in Vancouver and as much as I enjoy pool the milieu was just too nauseating to endure.. Think Tom Cruise sashaying and fist pumping like an obnoxious asshole around the table.

https://youtu.be/ZrjSqK7xPLE

I preferred the old skid road poolhalls on East Hastings just off main street with old world war one vets in their dirty raincoats coughing their lungs up into overflowing spittoons to the groovy hipster ones frankly.

Make sure the felt is in good condition.
If it is level, and the felt is good, you should be fine.
You can get them recovered, not sure of the cost.
A few cheap cues, some balls, a rack, and you should be good to go.
>>
>>524090911
They are hiding so women don't find them.
>>
>>524091863
Should I make sure it’s a very heavy slate table?
>>
>>524091564
We had a better system in Tennessee.
You put your quarters down to play the game, then when it came your turn you played the winner of the previous game.
It kept people from hogging tables.
Also, generally niggers were not there at the time. That worked until the late aughties anyhow.

>>524091948
>Should I make sure it’s a very heavy slate table?
Heavy would be best. you don't want it moving, but I doubt it make a difference whether it is weight holding it down, or just securing it to the floor.

From the style of dress, I'd say this is mid-30's to mid-40s, probably 30s.

They all moved to pubs as pool halls slowly became infested with people high on fent.
>>
>>524090911
They were dens of gambling and vice and women of ill repute so the Bible thumpers shut them down.

That's what happen to Johnston city illinois.

>>524091396
thick slate, all on piece. you want a single slab and over an inch thick. deep pockets so the balls don’t fill them up quickly. make sure the pockets are quality leather

Are simple pockets better or the fancy ones that put them all out front when they get pocketed?

just get some simple leather ones but make sure they’re deep and quality leather. the slate slab is the most important part. you can replace the felt after it gets worn. make sure you brush the felt in the same direction every time so it doesn’t get fuzzy and slow. never let anyone sit on the table or place a drink on the ledge or surface

get leather sheathed pockets that feed an autoreturn/ball return, you'll thank me in the long run. also 1inch piece of solid slate is fucking retarded and unnecessary if you buy from an established company. 1/2inch 2 pieces put together w/a notch is what I have used since 1996, refelted once when I moved where I live now, autoreturn has never failed. it's an olhausen

Most people just stare at their phones now. The human spirit has perished for them.
>>
>>524090911
I haven't been to one in a while, but I have been to a bunch. I prefer a table or 2 in a bar though. I liked Fox and Hound when it was around because I like cigar smoke.
Oh, smoking bans is probably what happened to them.

my black grandfather got through the depression by pool hustling

>what happened to
it's miserable being in public or around many people any more.
it's killed everything, along with phones and games.
the house/apartment has been set up as a diy fema camp

We used to shoot pool at my local pool hall while listening to this song.

>working class people got priced out of these sort of pasttimes via inflation, nickel-and-dime models of currency extraction across various subscription services that are basically required to live
>9 to 5 jobs disappeared entirely; no one has a reliable schedule and by the time you get off work everything's closed - if you work 12hr shifts then you have just enough time to go home, maybe eat dinner, get ready for work then maybe get 7 hours of sleep
>niggers going into White spaces and not knowing how to act along with the niggerification of White lower class culture that made these places undesirable to the kind of people who would maintain them
>>
>>524091948
Heavy slate yes and as large of a table as you can fit into space you are putting it. Make sure you still have room to be able to maneuver your cue without hitting the wall behind you.
t. used to hustle/get hustled playing pool in the 80's, 90's and early 00's.

>>

Most are doing fine. New ones are opening across the country
>>524091396
This anon is right about the slate >>524092336 but 1 piece or 3 piece is down to preferences. The 1 piece slate is thinner and intended for ground level installs. The 3 piece is thicker and intended to be carried upstairs or into a basement, etc. Just make sure its slate and not wood, that shit WILL warp!!! Pockets are your preference. Don't reuse the old felt, get new shit, expect $300 or so. I prefer Simonis cloth. Get a decent cue, expect $300 as a decent starter
>>524092508
That happens everywhere
