I hated, despised and curse the time I spent in garrison. The experience varied over my 4 years depending on how much of a faggot your company commander, or First Sergeant or Platoon Sergeant are, but for the most part it sucked. And even the training sucks. If the attitude and company moral is low, nothing about the training is gonna be fun or engaging and everyone is gonna be dragging their feet.On the other end of the spectrum, getting deployed can be an incredible experience. I spent 9 months in Afghanistan. All of it out in the country. And at times it was incredibly fulfilling. I was shot at about every other day (in the summer months) and fired/shot artillery at the enemy every night. We interacted with locals, grew out our beards, went on patrols. I was being paid to be an actual man, and do man shit. It felt different than just showing up at a job and being told what to do that day. A number of guys in my unit had breakdowns over things going on at home, wives and stuff. I didn't have anyone, my mind was totally in the game, everyday.But I hate some of the shit I experienced in the military, all in all, I kind of wish I didn't join. It changed me too much. I don't even think if you are in the best unit with the best leadership you are gonna come away from that experience with a healthy, optimistic mindset. Whether you are in combat or not. It's just too much training, readiness, mindset, acceptance and preparation for death. Your death, the death of the enemy and the death of your emotions. I've never been a cop but maybe if you are interested in something like the military, go that route instead. I don't know.
Most loved it as it was a simple, engaging period of socialising for them.
