FDR's new deal pushed the US in that direction of socalism for barely 5 years until the elites realised their monopoly on power was at risk and started the red scare to route out anyone with political power who was even slightly left leaning. I'm not a commie, most people aren't so this looked like a good thing at the time but it was telling.The economy was still centred around the worked until the end of the 70's when Reagan decided to completely kill the ability for the worker to negotiate with capital in the free market. Instead he used the power of the state to kill collective bargaining of the worker but still providing corporations with bail outs and government assistance at the cost of the tax payer while reducing taxes on the rich. When the president says government is the problem while protecting billionaires from legislation and risk from the realities of the open you are simply being robbed. Trickle down didn't work, the middle class declined and has never recovered but they keep doubling down.
