Drones hit port facilities in southern Russia, damaging vessels and pipeline

A Ukrainian drone attack damaged two vessels and port infrastructure in Russia's southern Krasnodar region early Monday, sparking a large fire at a key fuel export hub, local officials reported.
The strike targeted the coastal village of Volna in the Temryuk district, near the strategic port of Taman and the bridge connecting Russia to occupied Crimea. The Krasnodar regional operational headquarters confirmed that two berths and two vessels sustained damage, while falling debris ruptured a pipeline at a nearby terminal, igniting a fire that spread over 100 square meters.
Emergency services were deployed to extinguish fires on the berths that covered an area of up to 1,500 square meters. Officials stated that all crew members were evacuated from the affected ships and no casualties were reported.
While Russian authorities did not identify the specific terminal, the village of Volna hosts the Tamanneftegaz complex, a major hub for the transhipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and oil products.

Artem spent most of his life in Crimea under Russian occupation.

When he received a draft notice to the Russian Armed Forces, Artem decided to risk everything. He traveled more than 3,000 kilometers - five days on the road, crossing several borders, constantly fearing detention.

Volunteers met him immediately after he crossed into Ukraine, helping him with housing, documents, and the first steps toward a new life.

Today, Artem dreams of studying journalism and telling the stories of those who want to return home but don’t know how.

Russian drone attack derails trains in northern Ukraine, causing major delays

A cargo train derailed in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region early Monday after being struck by a Russian drone, railway officials said, triggering a secondary accident involving a passenger service on an adjacent line.
The state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported that the incident occurred near the transport hub of Korosten. According to preliminary findings, the cargo train was hit by a Shahed-type attack drone, causing the detonation of explosives.
Debris from the blast fouled the adjacent track, forcing the crew of the oncoming No. 45/46 Kharkiv to Uzhhorod passenger train to execute an emergency stop. The manoeuvre resulted in the derailment of the passenger locomotive.
Emergency services confirmed that the engineer and assistant engineer of the cargo train sustained injuries and were hospitalised. Among the passengers, one woman was treated at the scene for cuts from broken glass, but no serious injuries were reported.
The attack has caused significant disruption to the country's rail network. Ukrzaliznytsia announced delays of over three hours for multiple services, including international routes to Poland. Trains are currently being rerouted through Shepetivka and Fastiv while repair crews work to clear the line.

Gas supply to be suspended in parts of Kharkiv on Wednesday for repairs

Residents in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv will face a temporary gas outage on December 24 due to scheduled maintenance on the city’s distribution network, the Kharkiv city branch of "Gazmerezhi" announced Monday.
The suspension will affect specific residential blocks, including Otakara Yarosha Lane 16, Klochkivska Street 190-A and 192-A, and Klynska Street 1 (buildings 1 and 2).
Utility officials have urged residents to ensure all gas valves are closed before the start of the repairs. Service is expected to resume once the maintenance work is completed and safety checks on the internal pipework of the affected buildings are finalised.
"Gazmerezhi" noted that technicians will require access to individual apartments to verify the integrity of the system before reconnecting the supply.

Salary threshold for draft exemptions to rise by over UAH 1,600 in 2026 following minimum wage hike

Ukrainian businesses seeking to reserve critical employees from military mobilisation will face higher salary requirements starting January 1, 2026, following the passage of the new state budget.
Under Cabinet Resolution No. 76, the salary threshold for "booking" employees is pegged at 2.5 times the minimum wage. With the 2026 State Budget increasing the minimum wage from UAH 8,000 to UAH 8,647, the mandatory minimum salary for an exempt employee will automatically rise from UAH 20,000 to UAH 21,617.50 per month.
Experts warn that companies currently paying the baseline UAH 20,000 must increase these salaries by approximately UAH 1,618 immediately in January. Failure to meet this new threshold will result in the automatic annulment of the employee's draft deferment status.

Ukraine Tax Chief Targets Gig Economy, Warns Uber and Uklon Drivers of 18% Liability

Ukraine’s State Tax Service is intensifying scrutiny on the gig economy, warning drivers for platforms like Uber Technologies Inc. and Uklon that they are liable for the standard 18% personal income tax if they fail to formalize their status.
In an interview with RBC-Ukraine published Monday, Lesia Karnaukh, the Acting Head of the State Tax Service, argued that drivers earning "systematic income" through apps should face the same fiscal burden as salaried employees.
"Why does an officially employed person pay 18% of their income, while a person performing the same function does not?" Karnaukh said, highlighting the disparity between contract workers and the gig workforce.
The crackdown aligns with Kyiv’s commitments to the International Monetary Fund and the European Union to broaden its tax base. The government is currently pushing "Bill 14025," colloquially dubbed the "OLX Law," through parliament. If passed, the legislation would designate digital platforms as tax agents, automatically deducting taxes from user earnings.
While the proposed law offers a reduced combined rate for compliant users—projected at 10% (5% income tax plus a 5% military levy)—Karnaukh’s comments serve as a warning: under current general tax rules, unregistered drivers are legally obligated to declare their earnings and pay the full 18% rate.
Karnaukh dismissed proposals to exempt annual digital income under €2,000, calling the threshold impractical for distinguishing between casual sellers and those engaged in systematic business activity.

BBC journalists visited the Fire Point factory, where Ukrainian Flamingo long-range drones and missiles are produced.

At present, Ukraine produces more than 50% of the weapons it uses on the frontline, with almost all long-range weapons being domestically made (for example, drones - 90%).

Fire Point was founded after Russia's full-scale invasion. The start-up now produces 200 drones per day, each costing about $50,000 - a third of the price of a Shahed drone. Its FP1 and FP2 drones have carried out 60% of all long-range strikes in Ukraine.

Graham urges Trump to send Tomahawks, back European troops if Putin rejects peace deal

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday called for a "dramatic" escalation in U.S. military aid to Ukraine—including the transfer of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles—if Russian President Vladimir Putin rebuffs the latest diplomatic efforts to end the war.
In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Graham warned that the Kremlin would treat negotiations as a stalling tactic unless faced with overwhelming force.[4][5] He explicitly argued that if Putin says "no" to a peace agreement, the U.S. must authorise strikes on the Russian defence industrial base.
"If Putin says 'no,' we need to dramatically change the game, including giving Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to hit the drone and missile factories that exist in Russia," Graham said.
The senator also addressed the enforcement mechanisms of any potential ceasefire, insisting that Western boots on the ground are necessary to deter future aggression.
"I want a deal that would prevent a third invasion," Graham told NBC, referring to the need to stop a repeat of the 2014 and 2022 offensives. "I want European troops on the ground to make sure there is no third invasion. I want us to give security guarantees to Ukraine."
Graham cautioned that without increased U.S. pressure, Putin "will continue to take the Donbas by force."

Yermak’s exit triggers automatic dismissal of all advisors; Podolyak and Leshchenko expected to stay

The Office of the President has confirmed that all advisors and assistants to former Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak were dismissed from their posts following his resignation late last month.
In a response to an inquiry by Ukrainian News published on Monday, the Presidential Office clarified that the dismissals were a procedural necessity linked to the departure of the patron who appointed them. The decision affects the entire advisory team comprising four staff members and five freelance consultants identified in public records as of late 2024.
The list of dismissed officials includes high-profile media figures such as Mykhailo Podolyak and Serhiy Leshchenko, as well as foreign policy advisor Daria Zarivna and economist Oleksandr Rodnyansky. Staff advisors Oleksandr Bevz, Liliia Pashynna, Viktoriia Romanova, and Tetiana Haiduchenko were also relieved of their duties.
However, sources within the administration suggest the shake-up is largely technical. According to reports from Detector Media, key communicators, including Podolyak and Leshchenko, have already been transferred to new roles directly under the Office of the President, ensuring continuity in the administration's messaging strategy despite the leadership change.[10]
Yermak, who had led the President’s Office since 2020, was dismissed by President Zelensky on November 28, 2025, following a series of anti-corruption raids by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU).

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron successfully blocked a US-backed proposal to leverage frozen Russian assets for Ukraine, forcing the European Union to pivot toward a controversial €90 billion joint borrowing scheme instead.
According to officials familiar with the discussions at last week's fraught European Council summit, the rejection of the so-called "reparation loan" marked a significant diplomatic victory for Rome and Paris. The original plan, which involved using the future interest from immobilised Russian central bank assets to service a loan, was deemed too legally risky by Meloni, who argued it could destabilise the euro.
"Meloni was the kingmaker," one diplomat told the Financial Times. "She remained silent until the options were exhausted, then effectively buried the asset plan with Macron’s backing."
Instead, EU leaders agreed on Friday to an "alternative mechanism": raising €90 billion through common debt issuance, backed directly by the EU budget. This move shifts the financial burden onto European taxpayers rather than relying on the uncertain legal grounds of seizing Russian yields—a position strongly advocated by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, whose country hosts the Euroclear depository where the majority of the assets are held.
The decision represents a blow to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had championed the asset-backed loan to minimise domestic fiscal exposure. However, faced with a Franco-Italian blockade and warnings from Brussels about "prolonged litigation," Berlin ultimately acquiesced to the joint debt model to ensure Kyiv's funding through 2027.

After 130 Days on the Line, Ukrainian Infantrymen Return With a Prisoner in Tow

For nearly four and a half months, Denys and Dmytro, two infantrymen with Ukraine's 93rd Mechanized Brigade, held a single position on the eastern front without relief. On Monday, they finally rotated out of the trenches—and they did not come back alone.
According to Iryna Rybakova, the brigade’s press officer, the two soldiers emerged from the "grey zone" near Kostiantynivka escorting a Russian prisoner of war. The captive had reportedly been stranded in a neighboring foxhole for two months, surviving in the same freezing wasteland before being secured by the Ukrainians during their extraction.
The image of the two men, weary and smoking cigarettes after their ordeal, underscores the extreme exhaustion defining the current phase of the war, where holding the line often requires feats of endurance that test the limits of human resilience.

Investigative team tracks fugitive businessman Timur Mindich to Herzliya, Israel

Journalists from Ukrayinska Pravda have located Timur Mindich, a key suspect in a massive energy corruption scandal, hiding in the affluent Israeli city of Herzliya.
Mykhailo Tkach, the head of the outlet’s investigative unit, reported Sunday that his team had been tracking Mindich since November 10, the day the businessman fled Ukraine just hours before detectives from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) raided his properties. Mindich is accused of orchestrating "Operation Midas," a scheme to siphon funds from the state nuclear operator Energoatom.
Speaking to Suspilne, Tkach described the difficulties of the search, noting that Mindich has adopted a "conspiratorial" lifestyle.
"Mindich leads a very closed way of life... he goes nowhere and meets almost no one," Tkach said. The journalist alleged that the fugitive likely received intelligence from Ukrainian law enforcement regarding the media team's arrival in Israel.
Despite these precautions, reporters captured images of Mindich walking in Herzliya. The photographs show the businessman attempting to conceal his identity with a heavy hat and sunglasses, attire that Tkach noted was "conspicuously out of place" for the warm Israeli weather.
Mindich, a former business partner of President Zelensky and co-founder of Kvartal 95, was sanctioned by the National Security and Defence Council on November 13, shortly after his escape.

Opinion: The ‘Spirit of Anchorage’ smells like a modern Molotov-Ribbentrop pact

By Fyodor Krasheninnikov

As the Kremlin continues to invoke the so-called "Spirit of Anchorage" in its diplomatic rhetoric, it is becoming increasingly difficult to shake the suspicion that the fate of Eastern Europe has already been sealed behind closed doors.
One wants to be wrong, but the persistence with which Moscow references the August summit in Alaska suggests that we are witnessing a repeat of 1939. It is highly probable that specific "secret protocols"—akin to the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact—were signed in Anchorage, effectively formalising the partition of Ukraine and delineating spheres of influence between the great powers.
While both Washington and Moscow appear to be strictly adhering to this clandestine framework, European leaders and Ukrainian officials continue to draft hopeful letters and proposals to the "Grandpa in Washington."They seem unaware that the U.S. President has long since signed his name to a completely different deal—one that leaves them out in the cold.

St. Petersburg Outspends Moscow 3-to-1 on New Year Decorations; Syktyvkar Enters Top Spenders

For the third consecutive year, St. Petersburg has outstripped the capital in holiday spending, allocating a record 1.23 billion rubles ($12.5 million) for New Year decorations—nearly triple the amount officially spent by Moscow.
According to a report released Sunday by RTVI and the procurement analysis project Tenderscope, St. Petersburg accounted for more than one-third of the total 3 billion rubles spent by all Russian cities combined. The northern capital’s lavish budget includes a 40-million-ruble "freestanding light tunnel" and a "comet" archway in the Admiralteysky district, alongside a fleet of "multimedia" Christmas trees and extensive bridge illumination.
In contrast, Moscow’s official tenders totalled just 414 million rubles. The capital's largest single contract, worth 30 million rubles, was designated for the outlying Kommunarka district, while the affluent Central Administrative District received a relatively modest 28 million rubles for light installations featuring stars and window frames.

The Syktyvkar Anomaly

The report highlighted an unexpected third-place contender: Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic. The regional city allocated 186.9 million rubles for holiday decor, surpassing far larger metropolises.
Notably, 167 million rubles of Syktyvkar’s budget was earmarked for the rental—not purchase—of festive structures. These include regionally themed art objects such as the "Bird-Emblem" (a nod to the Komi mythological bird), "Komi Lanterns," and a "Chum-Tent" light installation.

Russia buys first-ever batch of Chinese cheese as Moscow seeks new suppliers

Russia imported cheese from China for the first time in history in November, signalling a new, albeit small, step in the diversification of Moscow’s food supply chains.
According to Chinese customs data analysed by RIA Novosti on Sunday, Russia purchased eight tonnes of cheese valued at US$93,000. While the specific variety was not disclosed in the customs entry, China’s dairy industry produces both standard European-style cheeses and niche local varieties derived from buffalo or yak milk.
The purchase highlights a shifting dynamic in the Russian market, where Belarus and Kazakhstan currently dominate import volumes—accounting for 15% and 52% of Russia’s foreign cheese supplies, respectively.
The deal comes amid a challenging year for Sino-Russian commerce. Despite strong political ties, bilateral trade turnover dipped nearly 9% year-on-year in the first 11 months of 2025 to roughly US$203 billion, weighed down by payment processing delays and volatile energy demand.

Russian Envoy in Miami: Kremlin Downplays Talks Amid Intelligence Shifts

1/2

Executive Summary
Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) CEO Kirill Dmitriev is currently in Miami for high-level backchannel negotiations with U.S. representatives, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. While Russian state media outlets TASS and RIA Novosti are providing granular coverage of the visit, Kremlin officials have adopted a publicly dismissive posture, likely to manage domestic expectations. Simultaneously, shifting narratives in the UK intelligence community suggest a potential opening for intelligence-to-intelligence dialogue (the "Naryshkin-Metreweli" channel) over traditional diplomatic routes involving European leaders like Emmanuel Macron.

Kremlin Messaging Strategy
Moscow is employing a dual-track information strategy regarding the Miami talks. While the state apparatus highlights the existence of the negotiations, senior officials are actively lowering expectations for a breakthrough. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasised that Dmitriev is operating solely on "reception"—gathering information rather than presenting new initiatives. Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reinforced this scepticism with unusual sarcasm, noting that Dmitriev "doesn't know how to play golf" and is instead "drinking Cuba Libres" while doing "what is necessary." Crucially, Ushakov preemptively dismissed the core of the current Western proposal, stating that "most proposals from Europeans and Ukrainians will categorically not suit us," signalling that the Miami channel may be serving more as a barometer of U.S. intent than a venue for immediate compromise.

2/2

UK Media and Intelligence Dynamics
Parallel to the U.S. track, significant signalling is emerging from London following the appointment of Blaise Metreweli as the first female Chief of MI6 ("C") in June 2025.
Mark Galeotti (The Spectator): In a Dec. 20 piece, Galeotti argued that the West must offer Vladimir Putin more than "politically vacuous mantras" if they wish to engage him, suggesting a recognition within the British establishment that current diplomatic signalling is ineffective.
Peter Hitchens (Daily Mail): Conversely, Hitchens has criticised Metreweli’s recent hawkish public rhetoric, characterising it as a relaying of "Russophobic stereotypes" rooted in Cold War thinking.

Strategic Outlook
The dismissal of French President Emmanuel Macron’s utility as a mediator by Russian analysts suggests that Moscow views European political leaders as having lost leverage over the conflict's escalation mechanics. Instead, the focus has shifted to hard-power brokers. Despite the public friction, the "Naryshkin-Metreweli" vector—direct communication between the SVR and MI6—is increasingly viewed by Moscow as a more viable, albeit hostile, mechanism for conflict management than engaging with European political figureheads.

> Norway is expanding its support for Ukraine as part of the large-scale Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine - for the next three years and beyond. In 2026, Oslo plans to allocate at least 85 billion kroner (about 7.2 billion euros), and a similar level of support is envisaged for 2027. The programme has been extended until 2030 and remains stable due to broad political support in the Norwegian parliament.

>Importantly: this is not about a loan, but about direct assistance - military, humanitarian and civilian. The funds are directed, among other things, to the restoration of energy, infrastructure, support for the budget and the private sector. For Ukraine, this means confidence that international solidarity will continue - not for months, but for years to come.

Question: Are the arsonists military men Ukraine has on the inside? Or did they smuggle in?
The article says
>Planning for the operation at the airfield near Lipetsk took about two weeks.
Two weeks speciail military operation
>The patrol routes and guard schedules were studied in detail, which allowed the military facility to be infiltrated unnoticed.
Which implies that the arsonists weren't military insiders but maybe that's what the DIU would say to cover their tracks.

Payments crisis ctatyc?

https://www.vedomosti.ru/economics/articles/2025/12/22/1165145-minek-sozdast-gruppu-po-monitoringu

The article says the volume of overdue payments only amounts to 4B rubles which isn't a lot of money for the treasury however. The "40%" of enterprises getting affected is downstream of the treasury failing to pay state owned enterprises who then fail to pay their contractors who then fail to pay their insurers who then ...
So I suppose 4B can snowball? I'm not sure it works like that. It's easier to believe that the government is just hiding how much they owe and how much is overdue.

These articles suggest that Russia's selling a lot of its gold, unbeknownst to global markets, to China. Some of Russia's gold reserves, and a lot of freshly mined gold, likely is being exported. But I'd be wary about speculating on the volumes being exchanged.
Russia has ~2.3k tonnes of gold in sovereign reserves and produces ~200 tonnes per annum for domestic consumption and export. Their reserves of gold sum to about $300B right now. The $2B worth China purchased, as reported in the 1st article, implies China bought only ~15 tonnes of Russian gold for the whole year at current prices. Even if they're out by a factor of 10, as the 2nd article implies because sovereign gold transactions are shadowy, that's still only $20B which is not an enormous amount of money in the grand scheme of things.

I'm curious as to how they would sell large volumes. I think traditionally, not just in Russia, large gold sales use a combination of air + rail + shipping. Gold cargoes always get a military escort though I think in Russia's case the navy is out of service so shipping is a no-go.
Which means that big sales would be easily noticed by the general public if you were to see a very large military presence on the railways. It's plausible that Russia is 'drip-feeding' gold exports to China to avoid arousing suspicion and maintain secrecy. Flights and trains through Siberia to China are pretty regular so it wouldn't be difficult to do.

Addendum: There are different grades of gold. I don't know how compatible Russian gold is with Chinese grades. If I had to guess, they were probably keeping their gold to a European refined standard rather than a Chinese one.
So if a decision has been agreed to sell Russian gold to China, Russia may need to refine their gold to satisfy Chinese demand before being able to sell it.

Maybe they just end up selling hundreds of tonnes of impure gold to Chinese gold refiners for a cut price and let them sort it out?

Finland's politicians has been bought by the Jewish globalists and they have sold out your country to escalate a proxy war with Russia whilst imposing economic misery on the people.

The Finnish political class is not serving the interests of Finns when adopting a aggressive attitude towards Russia (Stubb labels the No.1 threat to the Western world).

The country's leadership is largely captured by global financial interests including WEF (both ex-PM Marin and current President are Young Global Leaders) and funding from billionaire and Palantir shareholder Poju Zabludowicz (who also funded David Cameron). To top it all off, the Minister of Foreign affairs is also a Bilderberg attendee. Finland is a case study in how representative democracy (to the extent it ever existed) has now been completely hollowed out by oligarch and corporate interests.

it isn't shelling. that's the 155th NIB blundering into a minefield at Vulhedar way back when.
you are watching some officer retard in charge of the motor rifle platoon doing everything by-the-book (like he learned at academy) and getting everyone fucking killed.
the book, apparently, didn't include NATO having artillery-deployable AT mines since the late 70's.

Graham talks the talk but I dunno if he walks the walk

When Trump berated Zelenskyy in the White House, Graham was saying that Zelenskyy should consider resigning. Graham somehow thought that Trump's hurt feelings were THAT important

It would be great if the US gave Tomahawks to Ukraine but I fear there are too many vatniks in the White House (primarily JD Vatnik) for that to happen

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that only the most difficult 5% remains before a peace agreement on Ukraine can be reached. He praised U.S. diplomacy and sanctions on Russian oil, emphasizing strong unity among Ukraine, the EU, and the U.S. after recent Berlin talks.

However, he warned: “I don’t believe Russia has changed its core goal, the destruction of Ukraine as a state.”

The EU has disbursed another €2.3 billion to Ukraine, bringing total aid under the Ukraine Facility to €26.8B since March 2024, nearly 70% of the first pillar's total. This 6th tranche supports Ukraine’s state budget and public services, while also rewarding progress on critical reforms: judiciary, decentralization, agri-sector, green transition & more.

Ukrainian military intelligence struck the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai.

Long-range strike drones hit critical infrastructure, including loading equipment, the LPG pier, and port facilities, triggering a large-scale fire. Taman is one of the Black Sea region's largest oil hubs, with storage capacity exceeding 1 million m3.

Macron’s strategic move at the EU summit: Politico reports the French president played a key role in blocking Germany’s plan to use frozen Russian assets as loan collateral for Ukraine. Instead, he quietly rallied support for “Plan B”, direct EU budget support via joint borrowing. Macron made sure Hungary wouldn't veto Plan B if the reparations loan didn't go ahead.

Russian milbloggers are openly frustrated after Ukraine released footage showing unknown individuals infiltrating Lipetsk‑2 airfield, entering fighter cockpits, casually setting fire to Su‑27 and Su‑30 aircraft, and exiting without apparent loss.

They argue this is exactly what happens when airfield security, engineers, and technicians are reassigned to frontline or infantry duties. One calls the video a slap in the face to Russian generals who claimed only “idle VKS personnel” were being sent to ground combat. Some are now saying Russia should pull troops from ineffective deployments and return them to safeguarding key bases.

According to Ukraine's Joint Forces spokesperson Viktor Trehubov, Russian troops abducted around 50 civilians, mostly elderly, from the village of Hrabovske, Sumy region, after gathering them inside the local church. These residents had previously refused evacuation. Within hours, they were marched into Russian territory.

Ukraine's Ombudsman confirmed the abductions, saying civilians were detained without communication or basic conditions before being deported on December 20. FM Andrii Sybiha called the act “terrorism.”
