Americans don't learn the phonics, so they will always find spelling doesn't match and English makes no sense. Add to that mispronounciations of most vowels and the complete ignorance of classical English works going back thousands of years, and its only natural the language is a mystery to them.

English is a mashup language pulled from many different sources. It won’t have a rigid, logical structure like some other languages. They add new words all the time that come from other languages or are completely made up out of thin air.
