The issue here is whether Ukraine would agree to give it up now and save lives, or later after another million casualties. The optics are tough, in fairness, when there are people living there and to cede that land. The risk for Ukraine is Russia advancing closer towards Kharkiv, Sumy and Odessa during the Dunbas fight. Because after Dunbas eventually falls, Russia could then demand these territories that are now encircled and Ukraine's army is broker and weaker.
