Income tax was originally a temporary measure, necessary to fund the government during wartime because otherwise war would bankrupt the government. Originally it was temporary measure during the civil war, and then it was reinstated during WW1 and never got removed.

With that in mind, can you look at the state of the world and say that America would be better off if we were unable to support maintaining an army?
