The question wasn't "which do you care about more," it was asking about the extent of what you're conscious of or care about. The implication of the findings is conservatives don't care about or have empathy for anything or anyone outside their immediate circle, while liberals tend to have a broader limit, not that they value animals or the environment more than their families. This range of empathy and consciousness tracks with each group's preferred policies.
