Romans had long abandoned the old ways, had completely lost interest in the Roman armies and state, had depopulated their home nations, were obsessed with degeneracy and social concerns, the list goes on and on. Christianity percolated through the empire and when Constantine made the empire Christian it actually created a brief revitalization of the empire. It almost saved the empire.
