Artem spent most of his life in Crimea under Russian occupation.

When he received a draft notice to the Russian Armed Forces, Artem decided to risk everything. He traveled more than 3,000 kilometers - five days on the road, crossing several borders, constantly fearing detention.

Volunteers met him immediately after he crossed into Ukraine, helping him with housing, documents, and the first steps toward a new life.

Today, Artem dreams of studying journalism and telling the stories of those who want to return home but don’t know how.

Russia is not doing well on the battlefield either. Remember that in the past 1,000 days, they have advanced less than one percentage point of Ukrainian territory. So they're not getting through their strategic military aims either.

The Russian economy is actually not doing that well. They have zero growth, they are out of reserves, they have high interest rates and high inflation.
And it's not improving. And I think one of the things that hit the Russian economy quite hard were the American sanctions on Lukoil and Rosneft.

BBC journalists visited the Fire Point factory, where Ukrainian Flamingo long-range drones and missiles are produced.

At present, Ukraine produces more than 50% of the weapons it uses on the frontline, with almost all long-range weapons being domestically made (for example, drones - 90%).

Fire Point was founded after Russia's full-scale invasion. The start-up now produces 200 drones per day, each costing about $50,000 - a third of the price of a Shahed drone. Its FP1 and FP2 drones have carried out 60% of all long-range strikes in Ukraine.

Russia is bringing in large numbers of Indian citizens, explaining this by the need to address a labor shortage. According to preliminary information, about 70,000 Indians are expected to arrive in Russia. Given the frequent previous cases of Indian citizens in Russia being deceived into going to war with Ukraine, the question arises: how many of those who come to Russia now will go to die on Ukrainian soil?

Let's take a look at what happened earlier:

◾ Feb-Mar 2024: from "support jobs" to criminal cases of trafficking. On February 23, 2024, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially acknowledged that some Indian citizens had signed up for "support jobs" with the Russian army and reported that the Indian embassy regularly raised the issue of their early discharge. On the same day, Reuters, citing The Hindu, reported that this concerned about 100 Indians recruited over the previous year on contracts lasting at least a year.

On February 29, 2024, the Indian press reported that, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 20 Indians who had left as "support staff/helpers" had appealed to the government. The turning point came on March 8, 2024: Reuters reported that India had uncovered a "major trafficking network" that was deceiving young men into going to Russia with promises of work or education, after which they were forced to take part in the war. The case involved about 35 victims (compared to the previously mentioned ~20), and at least two deaths were reported.

>Russia is bringing in large numbers of Indian citizens

On February 29, 2024, the Indian press reported that, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 20 Indians who had left as "support staff/helpers" had appealed to the government. The turning point came on March 8, 2024: Reuters reported that India had uncovered a "major trafficking network" that was deceiving young men into going to Russia with promises of work or education, after which they were forced to take part in the war. The case involved about 35 victims (compared to the previously mentioned ~20), and at least two deaths were reported.

◾ July 2024: Political escalation of the issue and the first systematic "exits" from the Russian army. The issue of early discharge of Indians who were "misled" by recruiters was raised during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Moscow; public estimates by the Indian side at the time indicated that 30-40 citizens could remain in the Russian forces, and at least four had been killed. On July 9, 2024, Reuters reported that Russia had promised to discharge Indians who had been misled during recruitment; the Indian side said the situation affected an estimated 35-50 Indians, of whom 10 had already been brought home.

In the following months, the issue of "discharge" began to take on the characteristics of a controlled track: the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a parliamentary answer (Lok Sabha, February 7, 2025), said that thanks to regular engagement, "most" Indians in the Russian forces had been discharged, while the Russian side announced that it would stop accepting Indians from April 2024. In addition, Reuters reported in September 2024 that about 45 Indians had been discharged from service and that work on other cases was ongoing.

>>524179727

◾ 2025: scale and details of losses. The most conclusive source is the official answer of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Rajya Sabha on December 18, 2025: 202 Indian citizens are "believed to have been recruited" into the Russian armed forces; government efforts have resulted in 119 early discharges. 26 Indians lost their lives, seven are reported missing; efforts are ongoing for the early discharge of 50 individuals.

Taken together, these data indicate that the risk of recruitment is organized (networks of intermediaries/trafficking) and cumulative in nature, persisting even after political agreements on discharge. Therefore, there is no guarantee that some of the newly arrived Indians in Russia will not be sent as cannon fodder to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has been increasing its war spending every year. In the 2026 budget, the Kremlin plans to spend 12.93 trillion rubles ($163,4 billion) (almost 30%, a record since the Soviet era) on the war, the army, and weapons purchases.

This rapid growth in spending is happening without an adequate revenue base.

The Russian economy has rested on three main pillars: energy exports, gold and foreign exchange reserves, and the National Wealth Fund.

◾ Oil and gas revenues account for about 25% of Russia's budget and are the main source of funding for the war against Ukraine.

As of mid-December, prices for Russian Urals crude are at their lowest level since the start of the full-scale war, at just over $40 per barrel. In February 2022, Urals prices were in the range of $80-90 per barrel.

◾ Russia's National Wealth Fund is rapidly losing liquid assets: from $113.5 billion in 2022 to $51.6 billion in 2025. It was used to finance the budget deficit, especially in 2022-2024.

◾ Gold and foreign exchange reserves - at the end of November, according to Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, in order to quickly patch up holes in the budget and support the ruble exchange rate, Russia's Central Bank began selling strategic gold reserves. The sale is taking place on the domestic market. Access to foreign markets is blocked by sanctions.

In fact, Russia is "eating through" reserves that for decades were considered untouchable.

◾ Even the Russian media are now openly writing about the possibility of the Russian economy entering a phase of stagnation. According to experts, the 1% GDP growth projected by the economic development ministry for 2025 will most likely not be achieved.

>Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has been increasing its war spending every year.

Declines in industrial output have been recorded across all civilian sectors of the Russian economy. According to the latest data, there has even been a decline in production in the military sector, despite government contracts and financial backing from the budget.

◾ Due to sanctions restrictions, declining international trust, and high risks, Russia has extremely limited access to external loans.

There is little reason to expect a rise in energy prices. Therefore, social programs are being cut, payments to contract soldiers are being reduced, and further emissions and tax increases are being implemented.

* From January 1, 2026, the VAT rate will increase from 20% to 22% - the highest level in Russia since 1992.

* A radical tax reform for small businesses has been approved, affecting not only hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs but also millions of their customers.

* A law introducing a "technology levy" has been signed - a tax on equipment and electronics sold in Russian stores.

However, even the usually reserved head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, speaks bluntly - due to tariff and VAT increases in early 2026, the Russian economy will experience an acceleration of inflation.

"In December, certain companies have already begun adjusting prices with this in mind, but the main impact is yet to come," she said.

For now, the Kremlin is doing everything it can to sustain military spending, which it considers a priority. But the Russian economy may not be able to withstand the continuation of the hot phase of the war.

Especially if sanctions are tightened further.

Russian Deputy FM Sergei Ryabkov:

"It is fundamentally important that the United States, at the highest level, has agreed that one of the root causes of the conflict was NATO’s assertive expansion toward Russia’s borders.

As is clear to all of us, however, the ultimate test of truth is practice. With all due seriousness and attention, while noting adjustments in Washington’s approaches, we expect these changes to be further translated into concrete actions.

The key to progress along this path must be Washington’s real readiness for equal-footing engagement aimed at jointly reducing conflict potential, based on due consideration of Russia’s fundamental interests, above all in the sphere of security."

Russia is developing a new anti-satellite weapon to target Elon Musk’s Starlink constellation with destructive orbiting clouds of shrapnel, with the aim of reining in Western space superiority that has helped Ukraine on the battlefield, the Associated Press reports, citing NATO-nation intelligence services.

According to the intelligence, the so-called "zone-effect" weapon would operate on the principle of shrapnel, filling the orbits of Starlink satellites with hundreds of thousands of high-density pellets measuring several millimeters in diameter.

Potentially, this could disable a large number of satellites at once, but it also poses a risk of damage to the orbital constellations of other countries and to the International Space Station.

However, the commander of the Canadian military’s Space Division, Brig. Gen. Christopher Horner, said it is hard to see how clouds of pellets could be corralled to only strike Starlink and that debris from such an attack could get "out of control in a hurry."

Five-year-old Zlata recites poems from memory. Through poetry, Zlata speaks about Ukraine, her home village, and the horrors of war.

Due to shelling by Russian forces, Zlata's family was evacuated from Mezhova, Dnipropetrovsk region.

One of the poems recited by Zlata is especially meaningful for the entire family. The girl recorded it for her grandpa Oleh, who went to defend Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale war.

"I wish our children were reciting completely different poems and doing completely different things. Instead, they can already tell whether it’s an FPV drone flying or a Shahed drone, Oleh said.

For one and a half months, a Ukrainian ground drone from the Third Assault Brigade held the position in place of infantry.

For 45 consecutive days, the ground robotic system carried out combat patrols, suppressing all attempts by Russian forces to break into the sector with machine-gun fire.

Operators of the NC13 strike drone unit controlled the DevDroid TW 12.7 robot from a safe shelter. During the mission, Russians were unable either to infiltrate or to capture the position. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Warriors held the line with zero casualties.

[Q]: Can you give an update on the [Miami] talks that took place this past weekend, and could a trilateral discussion of sorts be the next step for Ukrainian, US, and Russian delegations?

President Trump: The talks are going along. There's tremendous hatred between these two leaders, between president Putin and President Zelenskyy, tremendous hatred. And I hope we can get it done. We are talking. Talks are going okay.

[Q]: Are you still pushing for the Christmas date deadline with Russia and Ukraine, and have you spoken with Putin or Zelenskyy, or plan to push the deal?

Trump: I'll do whatever I have to do. I'd like to see it stop.

The European Commission has carried out one of its biggest logistical operations by relocating a full thermal power plant from Lithuania to Ukraine.

The complex operation, carried out over 11 months, involved 149 shipments totalling 2,399 tonnes of equipment. In particular, transformers and stators weighed about 172 tons each.

The delivered equipment enabled emergency repair works in several regions of Ukraine, where energy infrastructure had been severely damaged by Russian attacks, Ukraine's Energy Ministry said. According to the EC, this power plant is capable of supplying power to approximately 1 million Ukrainians.

Thank you, Europe!

21.12.2025 – Update with a short frontline report on developments over the past few days

At present, General Winter has also arrived in the Pokrovsk region, which means the Russians will be worn down even further.
I am personally convinced that this marks the beginning of the end for the Russians in the Pokrovsk area.

Donetsk region, December 21, 2025

Over the past few days, fighting along the Pokrovsk–Myrnohrad–Dobropillia axis has been among the most intense of the entire war.
Russian forces continue to apply pressure through repeated infantry and mechanized assaults, supported by artillery and drones.
Despite this, no operational breakthroughs have been reported. Ukrainian defenses continue to hold the main lines — at the cost of extremely hard fighting.

The Pokrovsk sector has been the clearest focal point.
Over several days, Russian units have carried out a large number of assault attempts against both the outskirts of the city and nearby villages.
The pattern is recurring: short, intense attacks in waves, often with heavy losses, followed by regrouping.
Ukrainian units have repelled the majority of these attempts.
The situation in and around the city is described as extremely strained, but there are no confirmed breakthroughs into central Pokrovsk.
The fighting is clearly aimed at wearing down the defense rather than seizing territory quickly.

Myrnohrad, located only a few kilometers from Pokrovsk, is in practice part of the same battlespace.
Russian attacks here have aimed to bypass or tie down Ukrainian forces in order to create pressure on Pokrovsk from multiple directions.
The defense continues to hold its positions, but the front is extremely dense.
Artillery, FPV drones, and close combat dominate. Individual small terrain features sometimes change hands temporarily, without altering the overall line.

>>524183138

In the Dobropillia direction, the situation is more static.
The area has not been subjected to the same massive assault attempts as Pokrovsk–Myrnohrad, but activity remains high. Smaller Russian probes and artillery shelling occur daily.
After the fighting in autumn, the front here has largely stabilized.
There are no indications of a major offensive at present, but the sector ties down Ukrainian resources and forms part of the broader pressure against western Donetsk.

Overall, very high levels of combat are being recorded along the entire Donetsk front, with the Pokrovsk axis among the most heavily burdened.
Russian forces continue to accept high losses in exchange for attempts at local advances, while Ukraine prioritizes holding terrain, destroying assault waves, and maintaining control of logistical hubs.

>Conclusion
The front at Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad, and Dobropillia continues to withstand sustained Russian pressure.
The situation is militarily critical but stable in the sense that no decisive breakthroughs have occurred.
Developments point toward a prolonged war of attrition rather than rapid territorial changes in the coming days.
Winter has also arrived, which plays into Ukraine’s hands.

December 23, 2025 – the strangest night attack so far in the war

During the night of December 23, Russia carried out one of the largest combined aerial attacks of the war against Ukraine.
At the same time, the attack stands out as one of the most puzzling.
Despite an enormous number of drones and missiles being deployed, the reported damage was surprisingly limited.

According to compiled data, a total of 635 drones were tracked during the night.
Of these, 587 were shot down or disrupted by air defense and electronic warfare.
In addition, Russia launched 38 cruise missiles of the Kh-101 and Iskander-K types, 35 of which were intercepted.
Most remarkable was the use of three ballistic Kinzhal missiles (Kh-47M2).
None of them were shot down, but neither did they hit any identified targets.

To understand the events of the night, one must look back roughly a week.
During several nights prior, air-raid sirens sounded in Ukraine, but only two to four drones at a time were detected.
They flew at very high altitude, followed the same route over Vyshhorod via Ivankiv toward Zhytomyr and appeared not to conduct any actual strikes.
It looked like a systematic Russian reconnaissance operation.

During the massive attack that night, exactly the same flight path was repeated.
The main body of drones and missiles traveled via Ivankiv toward Zhytomyr, while Kyiv was largely left untouched.
When the scale of the attack is weighed against the relatively limited destruction, the conclusion is hard to avoid: something went wrong for Russia.

The situation inevitably brings to mind the Soviet bombing of Helsinki during World War II. At that time, the Finns blacked out the city and instead lit fires and lights on islands and in forested areas outside the city.
As a result, a large portion of the bombs fell on uninhabited areas.
The question is whether something similar may have occurred now.
Has Ukraine managed to mislead Russian targeting so that parts of the attack were, in practice, directed at “nothing”?

To be sure, as so often, civilian targets were also hit.
A number of smaller transformers were knocked out and local power outages were reported.
But considering the scale of the attack, the damage so far appears remarkably small.

Another unusual element is the period after the strike.
For several hours, surveillance drones have been circling along the same route as the night’s attack, repeatedly triggering air-raid alerts.
This suggests that Russia is now trying to determine why the results were so poor.
If the final damage assessments confirm the preliminary reports, the night’s events may turn out to be an example of a failed Russian prestige strike and a well-orchestrated Ukrainian countermeasure.

After the night’s attack, many have asked why Ukraine does not shoot down Russian drones and missiles already as they cross the border.
The answer is more complex than it may seem.

Air defense does not function like an invisible wall.
For a target to be engaged, it must first be detected, identified, tracked, and then intercepted at the right moment.
All of this happens where air defense systems are actually deployed, not along a line on a map.

Cruise missiles often fly low, sometimes below radar horizon.
Ballistic missiles arrive extremely fast on steep trajectories.
Drones can take detours and change altitude and course.
Many threats are therefore detected only far inside Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine must prioritize protecting major cities, power plants, electrical grids, railway hubs, and military logistics.
Shooting everything “at the border” would mean expending expensive ammunition early and leaving critical targets unprotected later.
The attacks rely on saturation: large numbers of drones combined with fast missiles to force Ukraine to choose what cannot be shot down.
This is a deliberate war of attrition.

Finally, a border-adjacent air defense would be extremely vulnerable.
Heavy systems near the border would be quickly located and destroyed by Russian Iskander or Kinzhal missiles.
What matters is not where missiles are shot down, but that they are shot down where they would otherwise cause the greatest damage.
The night of December 23 strongly suggests that Ukrainian air defense and deception worked better than they have in a long time — leaving Russia with an expensive attack that produced surprisingly little result.

Russian milbloggers are openly frustrated after Ukraine released footage showing unknown individuals infiltrating Lipetsk‑2 airfield, entering fighter cockpits, casually setting fire to Su‑27 and Su‑30 aircraft, and exiting without apparent loss.

They argue this is exactly what happens when airfield security, engineers, and technicians are reassigned to frontline or infantry duties. One calls the video a slap in the face to Russian generals who claimed only “idle VKS personnel” were being sent to ground combat. Some are now saying Russia should pull troops from ineffective deployments and return them to safeguarding key bases.
