The thing is industrial society didn't need to be this way. It could have been better, but they choose to create a society where people are alone and detached. They don't want communities. They don't want people to even try to interact on that level. They've removed society as it used to be almost entirely, from the family unit level to the greater village or town level. It's been a total destruction of the social interaction that used to exist, replaced with sportsball and whatever the latest TV series is. Everything is shallow and meaningless. Maybe they just exploited the opportunity, but either way, it's planned and executed ruthlessly. Ironically on this one particular measure, the USSR was at least more communal than the west. Probably the only part of life that was actually better for it's citizens.
