When those ships were unloading "italians" during those ellis island days, pretty much everyone from the mediterranean was on board. Not just Italy. When they arrived at the immigration office they simply said their name was "giancarlo rossi" , "antonio esposito" and that they were from "Italy". This also applies to our millions of "German" immigrants in the USA, who clearly have slavic features. When they arrived they would say my name is "carl weber", "hans fischer". They were from all over eastern europe, its just that the boat picked them up in germany and dumped them off in USA.
