Plywood under a certain thickness is stronger than ordinary hardwood. Also internal furnishings are made of combustible materials, that's why fires occur even in cities whose structural members are mostly brick.

Particle board and regular mdf is just landfill waste
>>

There aren’t that many trees left suitable for making furniture. You need long planks free of knots.
Even higher end places these days use nice planks to make thin veneers and then use particleboard or some other composite as the bulk of the mass.

Yeah, the outside and structural walls are usually some manner of brick or concrete, usually breeze blocks (pic related), but the floors, non-retaining walls, stairs, etc are still all studded out like they would be in an American house. I'm only after putting down a load of chipboard up as an attic floor after replacing the insulation between the joists with Kingspan. Cheap, does the job for putting boxes on, saves anyone from putting their foot through the ceiling of the rooms below.

Yes, tree farming and timber is still a thing. You'd more often see ply with the veneer then edge banding for furniture unless you want to get into real money for something like a wide dresser or coffee table or anything that needs a larger continuous piece. Smaller stuff you can still get reasonably priced wood.
My comment was more about the work bench where I make stuff, using the mdf as an easy surface that's flat for assembly.

In terms of insulation maybe, but granite has a lot of thermal mass.
Not as efficient, nevermind cost effective, but in warmer climates granite should be fine if you can afford it.
Not gonna be easy to install fittings though, or even hang a picture, so likely you'd end up with drywall on the interior, both for insulation and convenience.

The problem with tree farming is how long hard wood takes to grow.
Most tree farms are fast growing softwood like pine that grow to maturity in ~30 years. And even then they are still fairly small in circumference.

A proper hardwood that is wide enough to create nice boards for larger furniture take closer to 100 years to grow.

It isnt so much an issue with cost vs time, you could still profit equally well with growing the hardwood. The issue lies in the fact that most tree farms are owned by individuals and are treated as a retirement plan. Instead of investing into a 401k, they purchase a tree farm and expect the returns in ~30 years to be their retirement income.
Which is fine, just makes the soft pines the only viable choice.
Nobody is really doing the hardwood in scale because you dont live to see the profits.
And corporations are fine with going the veneer route so there isnt any incentive there either.

I love inspecting the real lumber and beams we used to use. I often see 200 year old tile roofs still in perfect condition. It’s amazing the craftsmanship. When you guys see those old timey 3 story Victorian houses with the steel pitched roofs, remember that those men were climbing rickety wooden ladders all the way up. It really is incredible what they were able to do back then. And yes, materials were of significantly higher quality.
>>
>>524297360

There are many hardwoods that grow fast or are farmed anyway for other reasons so their lumber is a cheap byproduct. Rubberwood is a prominent example, and is extremely popular for furniture.

>This confuses and enrages the Europoor.

"Chipboard (particleboard) was invented by German businessman and inventor Max Himmelheber, who patented a process in 1932 to glue and press wood waste like sawdust and shavings into panels, aiming to better utilize timber resources."

That shit is garbage. Falls apart if it gets wet, is prone to mold. Has very little lateral strength

The watermark says "Adobe", which is funny considering the picture.

Look at the columns of the entryway. For some unknown reason, the left one is split in half. Plus, the doorway in the bay window is unnecessary.

Other than that, I'd love a copy of this house.

Looks like the roof got ripped off in a hurricane. The amount of lightning looks like a hurricane. That can happen if you open a door on the windward side, because of pressure. They have discovered a way to mitigate that. It's called third nail or something.
How do they build roofs in Europe without wood? Truly curious

Please don't use particle board or chip-board anywhere. It poofs out upon exposure to moisture. Even under humidity it becomes sawdust again. Even as flooring in an attic, it is no good. I put my foot through some and stopped my foot before it went through the drywall.

No good, George.

We have this stuff too, we just don't use it to build houses. Not often.
A house should be something passed down from generation to generation. A way to build generational wealth. Something not only to live in, but to pass to your children and grandchildren.
Wooden houses exist here too, but they are seen as a poor persons choice, a reason they never build real wealth. It's a selfish choice, prioritizing your comfort over the good of the family.
In time my brother and i will be left two flats by our mother, and my wife will be left a house. With this, having built some wealth of our own, we will be able to give each of our kids a starter home.
My mother also owns two small wooden houses, but inheriting those will come with some difficulties.
With wood, the repair and maintencance costs are high, the older the higher. In the end the land will be more valuable there, the houses will probably have to be torn down.

the wood itself isn't what goes bad that will rekt you

its the hvac/boiler, roof, plumbing, electrical, foundation, windows, and septic (if rural w/no sewer).

the wood is cheap/easy to replace, the rest aren't. sheetrock is at least cheap/easy to replace vs plaster and you can insulate under it which improves energy costs. plaster is terrible when you have to fix any of the above, more difficult to repair.
