It was Satan. The "start" was supposed to lead the "wise men" to Jesus as a child. Before they went to visit Jesus they visited Herod. Herod told them to find Jesus so he can bow to him. In reality, he wanted to kill Jesus. So Satan lead the magi to Jesus so they could report back to Herod so Herod could kill Jesus. That's why Mary, Joseph, and Jesus fled to Egypt while Herod got angry and had every child 2 years old and under killed within his district.
