They were nobles, aristocrats. Feudalism was universal; some local dynastic family ruled an area of the kingdom under the king's ultimate authority and in the king's name.Feudalism is where land is owned by the king alone and he grants it as fiefs to underlings (nobles) who grant it as lesser fiefs to lesser underlings (like knights) who have peasants who are bound to the land of the lord they serve and are forbidden from leaving that land and who work the land in order to survive and to pay much of their extra produce to the lord, who pays much of his extra produce to his lord, who pays much of his extra produce up to the monarch who owns it all.
