During the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester railway, the first railway to connect two cities, several locomotives were running simultaneously in parallel. When two were stopped momentarily, William Huskisson, MP, left his car to cross the tracks and speak with Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, then PM.
