The modern Brittish accent didn't exist at the time of American independence. English speaking people sounded more Celtic at the time. The English accent comes from people copying how the French speaking royals sounded. The word "royalty" it's self is a French word.

America has an English accent. Englishman spoke the way Americans do now. The modern British accent didn't come into being until after colonialism as a means of differentiating themselves from what they viewed as barbaric colonists. It's based on gentile accents of the day. So it's not just American ignorance when we say they sound pompous. They literally do.
