African states are really really reluctant to let people secede as they fear a crumbling of the entire continent. The moment you try and break away, you face continent-wide backlash from every dictator. Apart from collectively maximising free-gibs, and blaming whitey and colonialism, it's one of the rare things they seem to agree on.
Throw oil riches into the mix, and you've got lots of empassioned nignogs.

It's the same shit holding Somaliland and Ambazonia back.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of books and articles written on this subject.

Everybody everywhere hates secession. Even if there is nothing strategic or valuable on it it's still a tax farm.

The problem in Africa is the scale:

A domino effect on the above would be pretty bloody, especially if separatists start aligning and getting patreon donations from bigboiz.

The reason I think Nigeria is interesting is because of the interaction between oil corporations, government and the people. It's very much a modern day version of what you had in Latin America with the banana companies and in India with The East India Company. You have rebels blowing up pipelines, and then being recruited by the oil company to guard the very same pipeline. So many things about government, corruption etc are illustrated in what's going on in Nigeria.
