Middle schools and high school is trigonometry - sin, cos, triangle theorems etc. All used heavily in manual machining. Back at the days there were whiteboards besides lathes. An operator used to perform trigonometric operations by writing on such whiteboards (which were not actually white) with chalks. It looked something like picrel, such whiteboard (called chalkboard) used to stand beside a machine. Not all workers used chalkboards, most workers were simply repeating operations crafted by engineers.

The biggest problem with the school system is the social environment. Relationships, ethics, and morality. In the school system children are cut off from their family, from elders, from the working world, which is where the main source of role models should be. The teachers are typically very weak women who have never been outside the school system since they were 5, very horrible role models especially for men. Most kids role models are other kids, which has resulted in the school system forming this isolated youth culture that rebels against the outside world, old people, etc. That is what created this leftism phenomenon. Secondly, they are all having sex and doing drugs and listening to rap, because all of the kids are bunched up together with little to do for decades on end with very little adult supervision. Thirdly, the subjects they teach in school have little practical application to the modern economy. It would be far better to teach how to grow crops, how to fight, how to do manual labor, cooking, cleaning, blacksmithing, car repair, driving, dancing, faith, sewing, weaving, machine design, rather than math, literature, science, and philosophy. The modern school system is like if they tried to take an upper class education and give it to the masses, even though the masses have no use for most of these skills, and there are other skills which the masses sorely need that they are not being taught. Replacing Christianity with biology has convinced several generations of Westerners that we live in an evolutionary arms race where the goal is to spread our genes more effectively than everyone else, which is obviously an antisocial ideology. It is safe to say that the more effective the "education system" in a country, the blurrier the gender roles, the weaker the morality, the worse the physical health, the worse the social skills, the worse the familial and cultural affinity, the more placid and unambitious the people are.

Also, since neither teachers nor parents nor elder brothers nor store owners are allowed to whack or spank or cane or whip misbehaving children, children have zero respect for adults. The only people they respect are the people who actually pose a physical threat to them, which are usually the most criminal elements of the youth population. Children will always respect and worship the most violent people in the room, which in the modern school system means "the bad kids" and in the wider world means gangsters. Violence is authority, and the delegitimation of violence by fathers, teachers, policemen, etc has meant the dominance of violence by bad kids, gangsters, rioters, etc.

"Universal education" is a term invented to conceal the true nature of education system. Back the days countries relied on manufacturing. Manufacturing was owned and run by capitalists. Capitalists wanted labour force. Labour force was created via education. Essentially, a person was educated to be a Shekelstein's Manufacturing Co worker from the early years of their life.

Not only that. Back at the days you couldn't just make a computer do the calculations, and not all of the numbers were put on blueprints. So a machinist had to perform calculations on his own. For example you were given a blueprint which has a cone depicted. It had height and base diameter of the cone, but not the peak angle. Your lathe could be set for angle. So you, a machinist, had to calculate such angle using trigonometry (sin angle = radius/height; then look up angle in sin table). That's what chalkboards were used for.

I don't know. In Soviet Union German was as popular as English in schools.

If you just want to transfer a length on a piece of paper that doesn't need to be exact, yes. This goes way beyond that in its implications. The drawing is just an illustration of the actual math, which is absolute in its precision, and is applicable for transferring any length from any point to any other point. You can transfer a length between planets with 100% accuracy, not one inch error for a length of billions of miles. But more importantly it's about mathematical proof, which is logic. Euclid's Elements teaches you to think logically. They don't want that.
