Also what made it really click for me is the khazars were nomadic steppe herders, which is why they lived in little 'jew towns' (actual name) on the edges of cities (also explains later ghettoization). They wouldn't assimilate into the culture they were parasitizing since they only lived among jews and their accommodations were essentially temporary ramshackle shanty towns partially made from their traveling equipment, which made it easy for them to leave or get expelled. Also the Kabballah stuff was from their pre-Judaic animistic religion

I don't think there's nay evidence of Kabballah in judea but I could be wrong.
