Not only were a lot of people sickened by the effects of the magnetostrictive technology being utilized by Russian intelligence for monitoring the interior of embassy compounds (and a lot of people are grossly exaggerating the seriousness of their ailments) but Trump is going after people (as did Biden) who attempt to expose certain facts about this, including the link between the use of the spy devices and successful incursions into U.S. Embassies and the kidnappings of American embassy personnel on more than one occasion.

This has been going on for years and the problem has not entirely gone away because any embassy not entirely protected by copper-wire mesh is necessarily going to be vulnerable to this.

But why would the US government cover this up? It mostly affected CIA personnel

This is such a an under covered story. Just imagine how this tech is used on regular people for research. It's a threat to humanity and I'm being serious.

There seem to be a lot of rumors and misconceptions about what, precisely, the technology was and what its purpose was.

There is a well-known phenomenon called magnetostriction in which metallic objects can be made to emit ultrasonic noise simply by emitting EM toward the metallic object. Some of the EM is converted into electricity which, as it flows through metallic filaments or coils, causes the filament to rapidly vibrate. This produces ultrasonic sound.

Half of the stories published have suggested that microwaves, alone would cause the neurological effects associated with the syndrome and half have suggested that ultrasonic sound was being generated from the exterior of buildings and neither of these suggestions are true.

Directed EM is used to provoke the generation of ultrasonic sound waves in metallic objects such as the coil springs in mattresses, antennae in wireless routers, paperclips and staples lying on desks, etc. That sound can be used to create 3-D maps of the interior of buildings when leveraged along with orbiting drones. It can also be used to determine if persons are moving about inside of a building. This came in handy in a couple of embassy raids in which they needed to know when certain areas would be unguarded.
