Putin wanted to have a conquest. It didn't work out. Now he's stuck because he can't take a "loss" or he'll lose the opportunity and probably get deposed. He's old as well, so not a lot of time and he knows it. Ukrainians don't want to be part of Russia again.
That, or this is all a giant jewish conspiracy to depopulate Ukraine to establish a second Israel. I'm inclined to believe it's the former, though.

There were definitely people like that in the first couple of years of the war but I doubt anyone still believes in Ukraine's independence. Especially now when the desertion rate is higher than ever, rotations are basically non-existent while Zelensky refuses to give up territories that Ukraine has not controlled since 2014.
