Judaism didn’t start as a fixed religion the way we think of it today. In the beginning, it was more about a people, a land, and a set of practices, not a clear-cut belief system with strict rules.

He explains that early Israelites weren’t radically different from their neighbors at first. They shared similar cultures and ideas, but over time they developed a strong sense of identity centered on worshiping one God and on covenant (a special relationship with God).
Goodman also stresses that “Judaism” as a single, unified thing didn’t exist in ancient times. There were many ways of being Jewish—different temples, traditions, laws, and interpretations. What later became “Judaism” was shaped by historical events, especially exile, empire, and survival under foreign rule.
