Jews do deep chronologies about everything (Greiber's Theory of Everything and 5,000 years of debt, Sam Harris' Mania of Crowds, their encyclopaedias recording every expulsion ever...) so surely they know very well when this practice started

To be more specific: were there (large) civilian slaughters during the globohomo wars against napoleon? During WW1? During the US civil war obviously yes... Was it always a morally acceptable strategy in war? Or did it just go undocumented?
I want ot believe that until very recently, war was between armies in a code of honor perfected just before WW1 or so
