In January 2024, New York City police responded to a brawl and property damage at the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters in Brooklyn, after the discovery of an illegally excavated tunnel. When the police showed up, a group of men started smashing and demolishing a section of an interior wood paneled wall. Once the wall was smashed in, they quickly removed what looked like a stained crib mattress from inside of the wall. Were the stains blood? Why was the mattress inside the wall? How did they know exactly where to break the wall to retrieve the mattress? Why did the police just stand by and let them remove what could reasonably be considered evidence of a crime, although unrelated to the initial call that led them there?
