Many many things depend on the line always going up, from pensions (like Social Security) to stocks to property. I personally don't mind seeing those things lose value, but it does hurt seeing elementary schools close and entire towns hollow out, with nothing to replace them.

We have enough food, hospitality and energy to take care of 60% of our population being in retirement, but the way our money is redistributed and how global events happen prevent it from being easy. Taxes are largely only collected from taxing people’s incomes, so you end up with way less revenue even if technology increases GDP. Paychecks have largely stagnated so next to no new revenue. Hospitals are also bloated with too much administration, the pay expenses for doctors in the last several decades roughly doubled while the expenses for administration have went 10x times more. There is also legal cap on the amount of doctor internships regardless of the amount of graduates in many countries, so even if every graduate gets perfect grades they still only accept fraction. Basically medical doctor guilds but propped up by the state. And financing housing for seniors is also expensive solely because house prices keep increasing in every part of the world. The last reason why lowering population is bad is because elites want more servants and customers so that they can extract more money from them, both the state actors and private shareholders. You also need to show growth or else you will not be able to get more debt, and if you start decreasing in GDP then your debt becomes larger proportionally. Armies also need more troops, if your country decreases in numbers it becomes easier to conquer and worse at controlling overseas territories.So if we got world peace, population of niggers getting lower just as much as everyone else, no debt and no artificial inflation in housing and hospitality business we would be ok.
