In the technological industries the immense fortune of the capitalist appears as the reward of innovation, yet in its essence it is nothing other than the accumulation of surplus value produced by collective labour. What confronts us first as stock prices and valuations is only the phenomenal form of a deeper relation, in which capital appropriates unpaid labour and converts it into expanding claims over future production. These claims take the form of fictitious capital, titles to yet unrealized surplus that circulate as commodities and command real resources. The capitalist state does not merely preside over this movement. It creates the juridical conditions for it, guarantees property, organizes subsidies, and transforms public science into private power, thus making society at large the bearer of risk while capital takes the gain. In this unity of industrial production, platform control, and financial anticipation, the tendency toward concentration asserts itself. Many capitals are subordinated to the few, and the producers become ever further separated from the means of life they themselves create. What appears as technological progress therefore reveals itself as the intensified domination of labour by capital, in which the social character of production grows, while its control is increasingly monopolized by private authority.
