For most of human history the production of goods was done in mind with the idea that the things produced were necessary and would last a long time so that scarce resources could be optimally used. This is why anecdotally you'll notice that most old things were built to last while most new things were built with planned obsolescence in mind where they quickly become useless and need to be replaced with an newer 'thing' every year.
