It’s mostly Western media perpetuating interests of elites plus years of Cold War indoctrination. Russia has been a competitor/bogeyman for Anglo-American interests for a long time. For England, it’s about keeping Continental Europe divided (I suspect also Anglo jealousy that Russia retained its empire while the Brits didn’t), and for the U.S. it’s about Russia adopting an ideology which was antithetical to American ideology. Plus for both, having a bogeyman is good for the MIC. I’d argue that many working class Americans and Russians are culturally similar: skeptical of government, zealous, violent, rowdy etc. Due to history and geography Russia is a very statist state. Russia goes through periods of autocratic control and then erupts in often violent, liberal reform/revolution (1905,1917,1990’s). Globehomo values like free markets, rule of law etc. undermine the Russian state’s authority. I think the animosity mostly comes from Russian policy not being in-line with Western ones.

Outside of the cities, especially St. Petersburg (Which is the cultural/intellectual capital, kind of like Boston, which is a hotspot for liberals) and Moscow (Deepstate hub e.g. Government, Military, Security Services e.g. D.C), the Russian economic inequality is jarring and most don't live Western-like "normal lives". It's pretty depressing desu. Reading history you realize that its always been like that. But there is something to be said how this inequality results in some of the best pieces of art and literature. Look at pictures of the gaudy Imperial Palaces and then photographs from The Prokudin-Gorskii collection.

The 1% of the Russian population are the byudzhetniki (lit. Budget-people, people in Government service who embezzle state funds but are loyal to the Gov but can be tossed away) and the remnants of the oligarchs. I think the oligarchs are the worst of the bunch since they stole/privatized Soviet capital and all obtained European citizenship and cruise around on 200 foot yachts. Naturally the oligarchs align more with Globehomo values like free markets, open borders, which is why you had so many of them become “opposition leaders” (Berezovsky, Khodorkovsky). As of recent however (last ten years) most of the oligarchs have been domesticated by the Putin Gov. This tension between the merchants/boyars/oligarchs is an old one in Russia, where the boyars are bad but the tsar is good. I respect the Anglo-American elites more in that they (up until the 60’s) used their money for things like beautifying cities, hospitals, patronage, opening art museums etc. I don’t think the Russian oligarchs have a similar tradition.

There’s an influx of Caucasian/Turkic migrants into the big cities. Russian women’s gold digging tendencies has only exacerbated with social media. Soviet boomers who still believe every word that the television says and run the country. Little social mobility unless you know someone. A quasi-civil war with Ukraine where population reduction is happening on both sides. Russian hate has been programmed for so long to be a bogeyman for “Westoids” that it is convenient to continue doing so. For the U.S. the bigger issue is with China, since we are so economically intertwined. Russia allying itself with China is a problem for the Realists in U.S. Government. For certain sectors of U.S. finance, China is a cash-cow.

What I haven’t able to figure out is whether Russia is controlled Globehomo opposition or not. Russia is adopting globehomo policies like laws against hate speech, digital id’s, engaging in depopulation programs (Russ-Ukraine War) etc, and yet goes against a lot of Western foreign policy. I think it is slowly becoming a Chinese vassal state and thus part of larger Globehomo. During the 90’s Western Governments (the question is to what extant) and oligarchs managed to extract a lot of Russian wealth and intellectual property (There is also a very interesting connection between this and the Refuseniks too). I think at some point they calculated that they needed to get someone from the Russian deep state (The security services) in order to hold the country together so it doesn’t balkanize into a bunch a independent republics with nuclear weapons and so agreed to get Putin in power. Perhaps that there was also a tacit understanding that Russ can pursue independent policy to an extant that it is still the “bad guy” (in exchange for living lavish lives) but can’t stay further from overall globehomo objectives.
