Since COVID, entry level employees in many regions of the country are are starting off at like $10-$20/hour for entry level positions, even though federal minimum wage in $7.25/hour. Unless you're in the middle of nowhere or like an extremely impovershed part of the rust belt, even fast food employees are starting off at like $12/hour, and in major cities it's closer to $20/hour. It's true that in previous decades employers paid close to minimum wage, but that was also because we used raise the minimum wage several times a decade to keep up with inflation. The last time we increased minimum wages was nearly 20 years ago,back in 2009 during the great recession. Moreover, COVID created a massive demand for blue collar labor that was difficult to fill - the so-called "essential" workers. During COVID, wages shot up dramatically for entry level positions across the economy and have remained high since then. Although it's true that historically entry level workers were almost always paid minimum wage, that is no longer that case and has not been since 2020. Minimum wage is currently $7.25/hour, but the vast majority of entry level workers are starting off somewhere around $10-$20/hour, depending on the region.
