The E.U. is no longer working for the wealthy, Western European nations whose interests it was founded to protect. Belgium, France, Italy, and E.U. ally Switzerland fiercely resisted the combined German-E.U. attempt to grab Russian assets and tank their credit scores. Sovereignty has been reasserted by the very bloc of West European nations that was behind the E.U. showing that it cannot dictate terms to its member states and is itself a powerless institution without any real sovereignty. Spain has removed itself from the E.U. militarization drive and opposed the attempted E.U. isolation of China, meanwhile Slovakia and Hungary have defied E.U. bureaucrats by befriending Russia. The whole thing seems to be falling apart at the seams. It is clear that the E.U. bureaucracy has lost control of the general situation and public opinion, and there will never be a "United States of Europe" as this contradicts the interests of every party involved. The E.U. will continue to be an HRE-style commercial and migration pact with increasingly bizarre and restrictive layers of economic bureaucracy added on until its constituent states realize that the benefits of economic independence outweigh the costly restrictions imposed on them by Brussels.
