Went to the Holocaust museum in Berlin Germany when I was 12 back in the early 2000s. I'm a country boy and my parents let me carry a small sheath knife. The museum guard became apoplectic when I went through the metal detector and he found it. My parents were non-plussed and just asked if he could all hold my knife while we were in the museum. He essentially told my parents they we're bad people and they were raising a monster. Everyone was very confused especially me. Later in that museum there was some big ass tree with a bunch of dead people names hanging in it. I climb to the very top and broke a branch and I got some of the worst looks you will ever see.

The first time i visited Auschwitz was with my parents when I was a kid, a teenager. I dont remember much from that trip, i had iPad headphones on and was blasting Pantera the whole time. Back then, id briefly been fascinated by the nazis and Third Reich, so in my dumb teenage mind, the camps seemed kind of cool, like, wow, someone was badass enough to organize something on that scale. The second time was around 2017, when i went back as an adult. This time i was fully focused on the Holocaust. There were Jews everywhere wearing T-shirts and hoodies with the Star of David, which felt like a meaningful experience for me since I have Jewish ancestry myself. I ended up joining an English-language tour group because one was starting right when I arrived. The guide took us through all the horrific sites. I clearly remember when we entered the room with the piles of human hair, the guide asked everyone to stop filming or taking photos out of respect for the murdered. And that, of course, was the exact moment I felt the strongest urge to pull out my phone and snap some pictures. xD An older lady standing behind me noticed, smacked me on the back of the head, and called me an idiot. I felt ashamed, so I left the group and started wandering around on my own. After that, I took a shuttle bus to nearby Birkenau. There i ran into groups of Israeli teenagers, they were speaking Hebrew, so definitely from Israel. I quietly joined one of the groups to practice my Hebrew a little. They didnt pay any attention to me, like I was just one of them, which pleasantly surprised me. I been worried they might call me out or kick me out as an outsider. Together with that group, i walked through the barracks and along the railway tracks. And thats how my second, and so far last, visit to Auschwitz ended.

I got to ride the Holocoaster! It was really cool, kinda like Six Flags. Wheeeee! The Lion and Eagle restaurant did not disappoint either. All you can eat!

I'm Jewish and I went to the Israeli holocaust museum for the second time. I had gone once as a kid to the old museum, this was a new one I hadn't been to before. I felt it was overly emotionally manipulative and I just sort of turned off. And it just sort of made the Holocaust look like it sprang up out of nowhere with zero examination of the factors that led to it at all. And I asked the tour guide why and he said the museum only covers the period from 1922 (or something like that) so the Jewish communist revolts from 1918ish wouldn't have been relevant. I was also REALLY high and ended up getting lost after this and somehow found my way to the Israelis attached to our group and through them found my way back to my group or I would have been fucked. Then they were explaining something after our tour and I sent a wikipedia article explaining that there had in fact been jewish-led communist revolts in Germany before the Holocaust and got chastised for mass-spamming the whatsapp travel group while our group leader was talking. It just made me deeply angry - like if you present a story that one sided, that's how people get killed in the future. You never resolve the underlying tension.

I remember telling them it would be easier to just go through goodwill donations and just throw dusty old shoes in there than actually verify they came from a work site and the teacher just got really angry. They never denied it or said I was wrong they just got angry.
