We do not have a modern example of what would happen in that scenario. It would likely mean that the economy would have a recession due to foreign money drying up. Or wars to sustain more growth similar to Germany in 1939. If we returned to a gold standard USD then maybe it would only be a depression while companies and small business adapted to the new economy but our current system would be forced to change.
