Our colonies, especially India, served as captive markets for buying/selling goods at artificially manipulated prices rather than 'the market rate'. Even nations we hadn't officially 'colonised' like China were similarly profited from since Britain controlled their coasts.That's why Britain became the industrial production centre of the world while simultaneously having the highest wages for those industrial workers. We were getting all the raw materials at half the price anyone else could get them.But then WW2 came along and we sold control of the seas to the United States of America - who then imposed global free market principles on international trade and also pushed for 'decolonisation'. Even going so far as to threaten to economically destroy the UK for trying to keep control of the Suez Canal. US did this for two reasons:>After the war USA had the largest remaining industrial base by far, meaning a 'free market' with no protectionism for anyone would benefit them the most>The belief that Communism would take root in unhappy thirdie populations that aren't free to govern themselvesWithout monopolised trade lanes to exploit them with, the colonies were pointless and only cost money and military assets to maintain for little benefit.Then without access to artificially depressed raw materials prices, and an unwillingness to lower wages, British industrial production died a slow unprofitable death as well.tl;dr The Empire was sold to America for food, ships, and aluminium.
