They might have had next-door neighbors who spoke Slovenian or Czech, and even if they were quite similar in genetic terms, the German-speakers and the Czech-speakers were considered to be entirely different peoples. Southern Austria -- Styria and Carinthia -- are basically full of genetic Slavs who are "German" by virtue of the fact that they're in linguistically German regions.
