The recent death of Chris Rea raises an important question - what happened to pop culture for mature adults? We have discussed this a bit on /pol/ previously, but it should be a bigger topic. There used to be entire genres of music like 'adult contemporary' aimed at people in their 20's through their 60's. Working-aged adults. There were bars and clubs which catered to the 'sophisticated adult' market. Even smaller cities usually had a place or two for mature people to socialize and relax.

Where did all of that go? When and why did pop culture become so infantile? Here are some examples of adult-oriented pop songs which used to be popular in previous decades:

It's almost like stepping into a foreign land where pop songs have correct grammar and themes other than fucking or shooting your opps. What changed?

And it wasn't a hit. That's almost an example of 'outsider art,' but it wasn't a mainstream pop hit or phenomenon in the general public.

historically, an adult is sort of defined by marriage, but marriage was outlawed by the ronald reagan governor of california

We're here. I guess we are supposed to be in a state of hysteria and peter pan egotism because of the stressors of life. The people are infantilizing themselves now. For example: I give virtually zero shits about politics. Yet here I am. Its the closest thing to 'adult' discourse just by relevance and nothing comes close to an actual adult community. I've learned in this world good things are relegated to the past. Not in a nostalgic sense but as the result of constant exploitation. Starbucks produces its beans and owns its property and owns its machines and the price still goes up.

Less than half of marriages end in divorce at this point, but divorce has had reduced taboo for at least 60 years. Your response is misguided with respect to its relevance in the thread. OP is talking about cultural norms and attitudes which arise from a certain amount of structural liberalization (not 'being liberal' or 'liberalism' but the process by which a structure facilitates broader human engagement) which may correlate positively to personal agency. Actually your preoccupation with power dynamics (imposition to others agency) is contrary to the concept of adulthood in this context which includes recognition of humanity and capacity to communicate with respect to individuality.

Chris Rea could have been invented to fill dead hours on AOR radio stations. And those kind of went the Way of the Dinosaur when radios stopped being a main source of entertainment (cars, businesses and homes).

producing pish as reliably bland as this almost an artform. Theres simply not the platform nowadays you need to hear it 50,000 times, whether you really want to or not. Everyone is tuned into their own playlist.
