In the Netherlands a third of the population lives in social housing. Which are non-profits renting out houses for bottom prices, as most houses are already paid off anyway. And they spend the rent on building more houses.It's works really well. I'm renting a three bedroom appartment in the center of a major city for a third of the market price. It's unironically the best thing that ever happened to me. Without it I wouldn't have been able to buy or rent at all.Now I also earn too much for social housing and earn too little to buy or rent on the free market. So I'm glad I already have something.

I was homeless and had to live in my car when I was still going to college. About 10 years ago. It wasn't that bad honestly. I parked at a local park that was near a gym. The park also had other homeless people that had jobs living in their cars, so in the mornings I would see the same people at the gym getting ready and go off to their jobs. Cops drove by frequently but just drove by without bothering anyone. It was a community setting at times. Some folks were very nice and gave me food they got from the food banks. People would hang out after work and shoot the shit and share their dinners as well. I used to join in couple times a week when I had time from school and my job.Never got shit stolen from me; not that I had anything worth any value. Felt kinda like a shanty town from the great depression photos but cars instead of shacks. Other than the summers being ungodly hot and winters being cold, it was not that bad. I spent a lot of time at my college's library when the weather was pretty bad.Thankfully there was a couple people that were mechanically inclined and they helped me a lot when my car had issues. I had a old Honda civic so it didn't really have much problems but I remember seeing couple older guys working on their cars all the time and would help if someone else needed something. After I graduated I was able to get a decent job and moved across the country. Still talk to some people from there. Honestly haven't felt a sense of community since.
