It benefited both people at the time it was happening but in the long term it wasn't profitable at all since it is now resulting in the collective suicide of the West at large.

Colonialism made people like Cecil rich because they would get all the benefits, so obviously they would be for it, but all the burdens of owning the colony would fall on the homeland.

Raw materials were by far the main benefit. The cheap labour and export market side of things was not that beneficial when compared to investing in the domestic market, since at the time eruope still pretty poor and had a lot of room for easy domestic growth
