Can consumerism (the modern capitalist system) survive without encouraging insecurities in people?

no.i literally work in sales and all it is is just motivating things like fear of missing out and creating needs that previously didn't exist. i mean fuck just listen to ads for security systems, they're the most blatant about it. they come out heavy talking about how dangerous and unsafe things are, but if you just buy this security system you can be safe again...! it takes someone who doesn't give a shit, creates a fear, and then sells the solution to that fear.i do it all the time to push people along trade-up paths. they come in for product and i will say, in essence, "yeah look you can get away with that one, it will do the job, but it's a little bit less powerful than this other one so if you wanted an option that's a little bit more than what you need just to make sure you never have any problems..." and bam. neuron activation, tell me more, tell me more, okay i'll go for that one.i literally tell them that they don't need it and they buy it anyway just in case they do.i mean it's not like it works every time but it works enough of the time that i make like half my money off commissions. aggressive sales tactics where you just lie to people are even more effective but are for cunts. i've always found that you don't have to lie to people, you just have to make them unsure and then offer them certainty in exchange for money.product knowledge is very important too though. not because it matters but because you have to appear credible. if people trust you they will do what you say and product knowledge is how you get them to trust you.
