The people ending up with titles and lands weren’t peasants, they were minor nobility or career military men. The peasants did get to loot and rape though. There are career military men now who can earn $250k a year (that’s the top 10% of earners) by working as mercenaries. Or, as they’re called in Western media, “private military contractors.” Even during the Civil War soldiers were paid well. Privates made $13 a month. Rural houses (where the vast majority of people lived) were around $500. Suburban homes are now $410k, so private would need to make about $130k to be equivalent. And just as then, you could theoretically make enough in two years for a smaller, more modest house. In WW2 the real decoupling happened, and propaganda was the main tool of recruitment. Anyone working any job could earn a living wage in the 40’s. Just go to the factory and meet the boss, and by lunch time you’ll be stacking boxes in a warehouse and earning enough to buy a house and raise a family in one income in a 90% white city (not suburb; literal city). I read a theory a while back that if the people in charge are prepping for WW3, it’s in their interest to keep everyone financially desperate. In the days of the internet, people won’t fall for propaganda as easily. And if they’re financially content, there’s no mechanism to get them go to war.
