Both of them obsessed over citizenship and other acquired and outward trappings of loyalty, rather than innate belonging.The issue is that you don't have control over your country, so as your country changes due to demographics or politics you must change yourself, or reframe your identity to avoid changing. The best thing here is to identify with your ancestors, your nation, rather than the sovereign state or its outward displays; what you are, not what you've been taught to be.
