In a religious society a small elite group of scholars know the theological works and disseminate the contents of these works to the people, they selectively choose what fits within the cultural parameters of their society (like how Western Christians omit polygyny from Christianity). In modern society, we have scholars as well, we just refer to them as academics and journalists, they read a lot of works which act as "the Bible" of our society, they disseminate these works to the masses through mass media. You've probably never read most of the primary sources on topics you have intricate knowledge about, but you know a lot of the facts by heart. Just like how most religious fanatics know a lot about their religion, but significantly less than the scholars they follow. The University, the Television, the Newspaper, and the Smartphone (the latter being a combination of the aforementioned) are all modern day churches. I'm an Atheist, I don't believe in any God or Gods, but the ideas I have questioning their existence aren't originally my own, they were broadcasted to me by "Atheist scholars" who did more work reading religious texts to thoroughly debunk them. The mechanisms of a religion are still present, this is true for both secular society and for organised Atheists. We didn't get rid of the Priestly Class in society after the American and French Revolutions, we simply replaced organised religion with a more subversive and "invisible" state religion in the form of Egalitarian Liberalism.
