The protest attracted counter protesters, and STG forces were present, supposedly to keep the protest non-violent. The protest turned violent, with STG, pro-government protesters, and Alawite protesters, accusing each other or different groups, of causing or even planning violence. One STG soldier was killed and several others were killed. Both protesters and counter-protesters were seen walking around with firearms.
