And with smaller roads everything is closer, which means many people don't even need to use a car or bus/train to begin with. The car dependence is actually a runaway problem. The more cars you have, the more traffic you get. The more traffic you have the more lanes and parking lots you need to add to mitigate it, and the more lanes and lots you got the further buildings are from each other, and the further everything is the more people need to travel via a car, and the more cars you get the more traffic you have. A vicious cycle.Look at Tokyo. It's one of the most densely populated places in the world yet the roads are small and it's very walkable. All because of excellent public transport. Traveling just using metro + on foot is a really nice experience there.
